Rora / Longside is an area of small villages to the west of Peterhead. Longside was a major RAF base in
the area that carried out fighter protection roles for aircraft attaching Norway.
Peterhead had a reasonable sized port and railway infrastructure that any invading force could make good use
Group Commander is Lieut. J.L Low, Headmaster from Old Deer, and 2nd Lieut,. A. Forbes, Fraserburgh.
Sgt J Burton, Greens Rora – Blacksmith?
Corporal William Strachan, Brigend, Auchlee Estate
Pvt W Mitchell, Keplahill, Rora
Pvt S Scott Hillor Rora
The Operational Base was located near Woodside Farm (below left) on the Longside to Rora Road, approx 1 mile north of
Longside village. The area is now a field (below right) but used to be woodland. Nothing of the OB survives.
RAF Peterhead would be the main target, also railways and bridges in the area from possible landing beaches
around St Fergus area.
Unknown at this time.
We suspect they were issued with the standard kit.
Peterhead Patrol Sgt Tom Catto, mentioned The Rora Patrol
often to his son. These patrols were in close proximity and both close to Longside
