Thank you for selecting information on the Hoxne Auxiliary Unit Patrol and their Operational Base in Suffolk. The info and images below have been supplied by Aux researchers Evelyn Simak and Adrian Pye.

Hoxne Patrol formed part of Metfield Group which also included

Group CO: Lt Hedley Rusted (a local butcher)

The patrol was formed by Major Raven of Hoxne and had the nickname “The Suicide Squad”.

Sgt George W Thirkettle (worked on Shreeve’s Farm, Hoxne)
Cpl Kenneth “Ken” Charles Rush
Gordon (George?) Witton (worked on Abbey Farm, Hoxne)
Herbert Knights TXIH 13/3
Arthur J Knights
Gordon E Thirkettle TXII 45/6 (brother of Sgt GW Thirkettle)
WEF Thirkettle TXBJ 89/1

According to information made available by BROM (Parham), the patrol’s OB was constructed by Royal Engineers and located in a private wood at Denham Low Road between Hoxne and Redlingfield.

In an interview conducted with one of the local farmers who helped with its removal in the 1960s, it was described to us as having been an Anderson shelter-type structure.

The hole in the ground was filled in and levelled off, no trace remains. The photo below shows an approximate location.
